When it comes to Japanese comics and animation, many of the genres are the same ones commonly used throughout the rest of the world. Action, adventure, drama, comedy, suspense, mystery, horror, and romance are all genres everyone is familiar with, and one doesn't have to look far to find these themes creating the foundation for several Japanese series.
While the most circulated series tend to be of highly popular genres,more obscure series tend to be part of genres that appeal to smaller,more devout fanbases. Lolicon is one of these. The term is derived from the phrase "lolita complex," which is used to describe people who are attracted to young (usually prepubescent) girls. The sibling genre to lolicon is shotacon. As a genre, lolicon refers to series that focus on or sexualize young girls to some degree and is almost always targeted at the seinen demographic.
Lolicon is a genre that is surrounded by much controversy. While it obviously appeals to pedophiles,many fans claim not to have any attraction to real underage girls and even find it morally wrong. Supporters of lolicon tend to argue that is is not bad because, despite the fact that it does sometimes depict young girls engaging in explicit acts,they are obviously not real. Many even claim that this genre helps to keep pedophiles from feeling the urge to pursue young girls. Others argue that these comics and animations encourage them. Seeing as how some lolicon titles portray grade school girls being raped,the controversy is well founded.
While some titles are very adult in nature, not all lolicon is rated M. Some series are accused of masking lolicon by making characters older, but still drawing them to look like children. Others just have no explicit content. Ichigo Mashimaro (Strawberry Mashimaro) by Barasui, for example, is a comedic slice of life title that is suitable for most ages as far as content goes, but is a seinen series that many consider to be lolicon. Despite this, it has been licensed by major U.S. distributors in both anime and manga form. Uta-Kata, a magical girl series, is another non-explicit title that some consider to be lolicon. A search at Baka Manga Updates will list several official lolicon titles.
Many lolicon titles contain yuri undertones. Stylistically, lolicon tends to follow the look of other popular seinen genres, just with younger characters. Lolicon is not legal everywhere and is sometimes hard to distinguish from moe. Explicit fan comics, or doujinshi, of series that are moe or borderline-lolicon are common.
Examples: Lunch Box, Boshi-Kan, Kodomo no Jikan
Dead Giveaways: Young girl casts, all girl casts, abnormally underdeveloped teenagers, moekko.

Thanks for the comment. I also am not into hentai and stay away from any lolicon that involves it because it's basically kiddy porn. Cartoon kiddy porn, but kiddy porn nonetheless, and that's not cool. I haven't delved into Loveless (I'm not a fan of yaoi or shotacon), but from what I've heard that is a good example of the more clean stuff. Ichigo Mashimaro is a good example of totally innocent lolicon, while Kodomo no Jikan pushes the borders a little more (but it's still fairly decent). I've heard the defense of lolicon and shotacon being a good outlet for pedophiles before, and that both genres being legal in Japan may have contributed to the supposedly lower rate of offenses against children. I don't know if that's true or not, though. Considering the young age of consent and young age at which kids start being sexual over there, it might just be that more of them are willing to be with adults.

3) Cartoon Child Porn: The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, ect(American Animation turned in to a porn by odd fans.) Aniem is not classified as cartoons due to the term "Cartoon" Being english so it should only refer to American Animation. Several Dictionarys both online and Books have agreed and made Anime a term for Japanese Animation Only.
4) Lolicon: Being A FORM OF ANIME in which an Underaged(7-16yrs old) Female Anime Character is depicted in a Sexual Manor. IT IS NOT ALWAYS A HENTAI(Porn). It is commonly found as Ecchi(Sexually Suggestive but not pornographic).
5) Pornography: A film containing Full Nudity with Sexual Intercorse included.

I made it VERY clear that I only consider HENTAI LOLICON titles to be "cartoon kiddy porn." And while I pointed out the fact that there is controversy surrounding lolicon--because there is--I at no point called it a social risk.

I have nothing against lolicon. I am a FAN of lolicon, so long as it isn't hentai. Does that mean I think it's wrong? No--as you stated, it's not real. That is just my personal preference. I don't think either should be banned. And for your information, hentai does not translate to art. Hentai is the romaji interpretation of the Japanese word for perverted, but not just in the explicit sense. It also means strange, abnormal. But most commonly, it is used to refer to drawn and animated pornographic material of Japanese origin. And, logically, if live action porn featuring children can be nicknamed "kiddy porn," then animated or drawn porn featuring children can accurately be referred to as "cartoon kiddy porn." Does this mean that the drawings and animations pegged with this term are not art? No. But hentai in itself is not an artform, just a word that has come to describe a genre. I believe in freedom of speech, so bash and attack me all you want--that doesn't make your interpretation of what I'm saying right. It just makes you another person who is too lazy to read anything in full, resulting in your taking everything out of context and finding it offensive to your views.
Rather than deleting your spam, I'm going to ask for outside opinions on how best to handle it. I'm shocked to see so much activity to have persisted during my absence. I would like to thank everyone for contributing their opinions, especially Bystander, who I can see actually took the time to read everything. RUDE, their being neutral does not mean they're taking sides with me; if you've read their comment in full you can see that they've pointed out things that I should not have said or could have said differently. My goal was not to insult anyone here, but to clear up any misconceptions people may have about what I have to say. But every clarification I've tried to make has been met with little more than insults. I find it very ironic that I'm getting accused of flaming and insulting people left and right when I'm being called dumb, a coward, and vermin because I've pointed out people posting in a manner that makes them look foolish. captjsparrow's first comment on my hub started with "NION. are you as stupid?", and his/her comments became more insulting from that point on. Akemi's comment began with telling me to shut up. I haven't called any stupid, I haven't told anyone to go away, I haven't told anyone that what they have to say doesn't matter, and I haven't even deleted any of the comments that are attacking me personally on my own hub.
As for the statement Bystander pointed out, you definitely have a point. I can see how making a statement like that might make it sound to some that I'm calling lolicon fans pedophiles, making me seem quite opinionated in consequence. The rest of that sentence, however, stated that many lolicon fans are not attracted to underage girls at all. This sentence in full was meant to express that while some of the fans are pedophiles, not all are, and being a fan of lolicon doesn't make one a supporter of pedophilia. If I failed to express that then I will probably go back and make it clearer. And you're absolutely right in pointing out that some of what I've said has been "flame food." I myself referred to this hub as "flame fodder" when I posted about it a few days ago elsewhere.
I try to make my hubs informative and explorative of various points of view, but I don't want them to sound opinionated--that's what comments are for, and you'd better believe that I'm going to express my opinion in comments on my own hub. No matter how detached I may try to remain, people insulting me on my hub is eventually going to piss me off. If you all are throwing a fit over the fact that I used the word foolish, then please go back and re-read what I actually wrote. I did not say I was trying to make a fool out of anyone, I said I would allow people to make fools of themselves by not deleting comments. You demand people be civil and not insulting, as you accuse me of being, but you are insulting anonymous and their comment, which is completely neutral. The majority of the discussion here has gravitated toward being about each other's comments, and not the article at all, including yours. Considering that this is what anonymous's comment also focused on, I think it is completely relevent. Either way, this entire ordeal is becoming ridiculous.

I believe that Lolicon anime is perfectly fine. Even if it does include sexual acts. None of the characters are real, no children were harmed in the making. If someone is stupid enough to look at Lolicon and think it is okay do do what the artist is depicting, then that is their own fault. It's like blaming the rise of school-shootings and child-related crimes on video games. It was not the artists intentions to have those people go out and actually do what their art is depicting. Child Porn, using real children, is wrong because it uses real children and actually harm the children in the making. But if the children aren't real, then what's the big deal? I think that no one should blame what pedophiles do on Lolicon or cartoon porn, because it's the pedophiles choice to go out and do that to a child. It's not like the artist held a gun to their head and said "Do this or I'll kill you." The pedophile decided on their own accord to do this. They are sick and twisted people. So in the end, I believe Lolicon is perfectly fine.

its time for lolz in the Lolicon hub. =p haha.. sorry, I just found that capt idiot highly entertaining, and felt the need to post. You can call it whatever you want to Nion, but that doesnt make it so or make it right for an otaku like capt to defend the genre's proper name. (Tho it cleary offends the name 'lolicon') Apparently anyone with a mind could see both sides of this rediculous arguement. This of course, is the internet, someone's always going to have an opinion, but to get upset about something so not worth it, - capt need a better hobby or L2 post on the internet. Nion handled it ok for the most part. Tho I dont know why you'd even bother to interact with people not willing to respect your POV in the first place. ..And perhaps some thoughts like "cartoon kiddy porn" are better kept in your head. Japanese anime hentai is serious business (lol), theres a fine line, and we dont want to offend its proper genres.

Wow, ok, here's my comment. First off, it is true that the people in Kodomo No Jikan aren't real. In that case, it makes it a little less hard for us to watch because it's not actually happening in front of us. Although i would like to say that those characters are probably based on things that could really happen. kids these days are getting more sexual, and it's not ok. it's also not good for kids to even be watching something rated M like that. even though it's more meant for adults, i find it very wrong and dirty, but i do love the characters. that is why i am fixing everything in my imagination by writing things the way it should. also, it doesn't matter if it is American or Japanese; that's being racist almost. it's the same thing. you can see what's going on; it's english subbed, so it's the same thing.
so for conlusion, i find Kodomo No Jikan...not really porn, but perverted, dirty, wrong, disgusting, but probably...the real world. it's sad, but true. but keept it away from children, and to help out, even if your an adult try not to look at it too much, but do know that it's the real world and we need to pray for those who are acting so wrong and foolish....that includes Rin, Kuro, and even the teacher. and i don't mean "pray for those characters who aren't real", but "pray for those people who are doing such acts as those characters".
well i dont think the people who collect lolicon should be chard with having real child porn, cuz it violates the freedom of expression and speech law,
no one knows if lolicon can lead to men raping kids or if it helps them in the fact of the get off with those cartoon fake girls so they do nt go out to hurt a real girl,,

lolicon my friends is something I am very passionate about. Although I do have some people I WANT to comment on, I don't wish to stir up a situation reminiscent of the original nion/jsparrow war here. as a result, only that previous sentence shall contain names. although i am not registered on this site I am allowed an opinion as the users of this site are. on the article, I myself found nothing wrong with it. speaking of information or otherwise. my main tactic at avoiding annoyance on the internets is to say "screw the trouble of small details". I noticed the phrases that first started trouble, but I just passed them up and searched for the main idea. and as for comments, whenever someone calls lolicon sick or wrong I just think (meh, to each their own.) some people such as myself practically breathe lolicon, while others loathe it with all fibers of their being. while it IS nice to find fellow lolicons, it doesn't really affect me either way. the only time i ever get battle ready and start flaming the f out of someone is when they say something truly stupid like "BAN ALL LOLICON, WHO'S WITH ME?". in which case I enjoy watching them getting piled on and slammed by lolicons. THAT kind of anti-lolicon should just say he doesn't like it instead of ordering it destroyed. they ALWAYS end up finding out how outnumbered they are.

"Yuri undertones" is right. Ichigo Mashimaro (Strawberry Marshmallow) has those pretty consistantly. The Onee-san character in that series is very clearly a loli admirer, though this just adds to the hilarity. I do think it's geared towards older men, though, because, though it's pretty light, there's a good amount of adult humor in it.
In fact, I think I remember seeing a review on Amazon for the English version of the first volume--a woman who had bought the manga for her eight-year-old because the cover looked cute and innocent, but then was horrified when she actually read it and found it to have "naughty words" and a drunk, chain-smoking border-line pedophile older sister as one of the main characters. Haha.
It's probably my favorite comedy manga of all time, though.

I am also a huge supporter of lolicon, and am not someone who will start an all out war (Nion and Capt j sparrow. Lol) though I'd love to read another. I'm not sure I'd be a big fan of toddlercon though. And I just cannot find any more lolicon.

Well you certainly do know a lot about lolicon hentai, as I'm fairly impressed by you're amount of knowledge on the subject. Although I can't say that I've ever read a lolicon manga, or have any desire to read one soon, but it was interesting reading your hub explaining it in detail.
To be honest, I don't know if lolicon or shotacon promote pedolophilia anymore than it does to prevent it, as I'm not a psychologist or a sociologist to figure that out. What I do know is this. Whether lolicon or shotacon existed or not, there's always going to be pedophiles out there that will maliciously hurt children.
Personally, I think more research needs to be done on this to establish how a person becomes a pedophile before judging whether or not this type of anime should be illegalized, as even most psychologists aren't really sure. Hell, we just barely discovered that people are born gay versus what many originally believed was a subconscious or conscious choice. Who's to say that we won't discover years later that people are just born that way, or that it's a cause of some type of psychological disorder. the point is, there's very little evidence to go on at this point.

I'm not much for hentai but I think that lolicon is a some what legal subsisitue for a pedophile to get off and maybe hurt a child. There are some friendly Shota and loli con like Loveless (yaoi/shotacon) for example. None the less; those who buy lolicon should be careful how they watch it or who else is watching it with them.
