Finding Coffee in Savannah, Georgia

By Nion Kokesu

Constantly bustling with locals, tourists, and people on the go, Savannah makes sure not to cut corners when it comes to coffee houses--there are several in and around town. While everyone is entitled to frequenting their own favorite spot, there are a few places that tend to be mentioned more than others, as well as many that don't get the recognition they deserve.

Starbucks

Of course. If there's a Starbucks in the vicinity you can guarantee people are going to know about it. There's one at the Oglethorpe Mall's Barnes and Nobles, there's one just down the street from there, and there's one at the corners of Bull and Broughton street right in the heart of downtown Savannah. For those who just can't get enough, several other affiliated venues "proudly serve" Starbucks coffee.

Metro Coffee House

Not a Starbucks fan, but still want to get your fix someplace everyone talks about? Located on MLK Boulevard, this huge coffee house is very popular amongst SCAD students. Very appropriate, seeing as how the owner is a grad student at the famous art school. In addition to a variety of beverages, Metro serves sandwiches and snacks with vegan options and is very well-known in the area for its bubble tea--a Taiwanese tea with tapioca pearls mixed in. Its many tables and couches make it a great place to hang out, and they host music performances regularly.

Gallery Espresso

A popular hangout for mods, this coffee house also functions as a gallery that features works by local artists. Located on Bull Street, it boasts a varied menu, serves gourmet European coffee and tea, and is a pet-friendly venue. It also proudly holds the title of the oldest, most award-winning coffee house in town. It is definitely worth a visit for anyone wanting to really get a taste of Savannah.

Sentient Bean

Owned by a lesbian couple, this coffee house is popular with the gay and bohemian crowds. It serves a variety of beverages and offers great organic eats with vegan options. Pet-friendly, it has seating out front, inside, and out back, and has a stage for live performances. It's perfectly placed next to the health food store, Brighter Day, at the southern end of Forsyth Park.

Starlander Café

Named for its location in the Starland district, the Starlander is on 41st street off of Drayton--right next to the Savannah Dog Park. Another gay-friendly venue, it is a café and coffee house that hosts monthly performances and exhibitions. It's the perfect place for the entire family to grab a bite and a drink without having to leave the family pet behind.

Jo To Go

Are you on the Southside? Too busy to stop for coffee at the mall or the dreaded Abercorn/Montgomery Crossroads intersection? Jo To Go, at Eisenhower and Waters, is the perfect place to get your coffee quickly. With two drive in windows and a walk up window, Jo To Go offers hot and cold drinks and a staff that's willing to help you get what you want if you're only familiar with the Starbucks menu. The owner also owns the Cold Stone in Abercorn's Publix plaza.

This list is just a starter; Savannah has several more coffee houses and café tucked in its many corners. Take it upon yourself to find out which one is right for you.
